Cafe Update from Joel!

The cafes have now been running for 3 weeks since the beginning of a new term. They’ve been developing in amazing ways and growing in the numbers that attend. They have continued to grow as a direct result of the young people getting excited about what’s going on and they are bringing their mates along which is awesome to see.

Its been really exciting to see fresh faces coming to find out what the cafés are all about, this week we saw 72 young people come to Aston Clinton youth café which was incredible and to see them having such a great time while making new friends was a real joy.

As a team we are inspired by how willing the young people are to get stuck in with Youth Cafés, whether helping set up or pack down equipment or helping us to create a healthy and safe culture for the young people to experience an amazing sense of community.

We also had an all time high number of young people at the Great Brickhill Youth Café on Friday, which incredibly exciting. Here is a quote from Marco Loxley is the Cafe manager: “The team are excited for the new term with there being so much potential for growth in the café and in the young people, who are learning more about themselves and each other.”

Update from Dave

We have had an awesome September so far with lots of events, activities, new people joining the team! The sun is still shining and its Autumn, so we are blessed.

As you know we have set up lots of youth cafes in Bucks, most recently we are setting up Pitstone/Ivinghoe, Prebendal Farm and we are working on two other groups in Winslow and Haddenham too.

We are inspiring many more places across the UK to set up youth cafe projects. This is through our Cafe in a Box website (Which is about to have its 1st birthday  this October!) Furthermore, we have since launched a new website called Cafe 2012 which gives you all the resources you need to set up a sports-style youth cafe for 2012.

There is a lot of excitement around the 2012 games coming to the UK and AVYFC are really privilidged to be involved with many local groups planning activities events and thinking about legacy too.

We have already agreed to run a Sports Cafe at the Aylesbury College during the 2012 games and are talking with other partners too.

More than Gold are helping support churches across the UK with projects and initiatives that will help communities really engage with the games. Cafe 2012 is one of the youth initiatives they are promoting. Check out their website at www.morethangold.org.uk

I’ll keep you posted as things develop!

Joel’s 1st Blog for AVYFC

Hi – i’m Joel from Newbury and i’m a gappy with AVYFC!

I’ve had an amazing weekend going to Soul Survivor Watford on Saturday with some JVs and the team and seeing one of the young people become a christian which is INCREDIBLE!

The weekend finished off with an awesome talk by Marco and Ben at Aston Clinton Youth Church, and I was invited to be on the interview panel which was good fun too.

It’s been amazing to see God working in and around Aylesbury Vale and i’m looking forward to my 2nd week at the various Youth Cafes.

Here is a picture from our team at Soul Survivor over the summer. If you dont know everyone in the picture, they are from left to right top row: Saskia, Adam, Marco, Sam, Matt, Sarah, Jacob, Amanda, Ben, Gabby, Finn AND front row left to right… Dave, Natalie, Ruth, ME (Joel) and Cameron.

Southcourt Studios Update

Southcourt Studios is the name of the music project from Aylesbury Vale Youth for Christ.  We’re based in Southcourt in the Church of the Guardian Angels parish hall and we’re often found here looking after rehearsals and recording sessions with various bands from around the town.

There’s a rehearsal taking place as I type – the guys are getting ready for a gig next week – and we have some other exciting recording sessions coming up too.  We have young rappers and bands coming down here to access high quality recording facilities at accessible prices, and along with that they’re gaining industry insight from some highly experienced and professional staff.

We have more recently started offering recording ‘experiences’ for budding singers to come and see what it’s like to work in a recording studio.

We have the luxury of a big hall with a stage that we use for our live gigs and concerts, the next of which is on June 24th.  That Friday evening will see students from Mandeville School organise the opportunity for 3 local bands to perform in front of their peers.  These are great nights as these opportunities are quite rare, especially for under-18′s.  It’s a privilege to be able to facilitate these events for them.

Later this year we’ll be working in conjunction with Aylesbury Music Centre to host a performance by our good friend Clive Carroll at the Music Centre.  Clive’s regarded as one of the UK’s finest guitar players, and he’s a thoroughly nice bloke too!  The date is October 15th, so get it in your diaries!  There’s also a chance he’ll be doing a workshop during the day, so stay tuned for more on that!

If you’d like to know more about the studio you can visit the website at http://www.southcourtstudios.com.  There you can sign up to our mailing list to be the first to know about upcoming events and opportunities.

AVYFC Vision Day 4/6/11

Last Saturday saw the AVYFC leadership team meet to discuss the way forward for the organisation.  With so many streams of activity, so much needs to be taken into account and prepared for.  Many of things won’t be seen or instantly appreciated, but they’ll be there and make a big difference.  Things like insulation for the studio, and new telephone systems…!  They’ll be there, and they’ll help us do our job better.

We discussed some really exciting developments – new events like ‘Vale Stock’, youth gigs, and Cafe-in-a-box.  There were dreams being discussed – for new buildings, increased integration with local schools and churches, and also an overwhelming sense that the team is working together to create safe environments for young people to grow.

Stay tuned for more exciting opportunities to get involved!  One such way is to pray for the team and the young people we work with across the Vale.  Thanks.

Sports cage at Cheddington Youth Cafe

What a crazy day Tuesday was, after the terrific cafe at Haddenham it was straight over to Cheddington which is a few miles north of Aylesbury.

When we arrived we were met my Marco, Matt and the “cage team”. The team immediately set to work. I absolutely admire the teams dedication to the task at hand. They were professional, focused and quick!

The cage was setup very quickly and the hall quickly filled up. There were was a great vibe from the beginning. Sometimes the excitement became too competitive but it was very easily monitored.

There were small games of football and hockey. The finale was everyone in the cage for a session of group games. These are important as it greats unity and can bring down any boundaries that may exist in a community.

There wasn’t just the cage there, in the same hall there was basketball and table tennis. In another room there were Nintendo Wii, Xbox, Connect Four and card games setup. By the entrance there was a tuck shop where two volunteers took the register and provided everyone with snacks and fizzy drinks.

For now, I can share these photos with you. A video is on it’s way and I promise to do an edit as soon as I can.

My final day at Haddenham Cafe

It was a cloudy day, the cafe was not filling up quickly and the usual buzz was not there. I thought this should not be the way to end my time here. But very quickly a Rounders game (equivalent to Baseball) was organized and things soon picked up.

We were joined by two members of Bath YFC; Steve and Luke. They came to Aylesbury to see how we did things. They got stuck into the Rounders game which got competitive very quickly all in a friendly manner of course.

Naturally this was a fantastic opportunity for me to take photos with the Canon 5D Mk2.

A fantastic and memorable way to end my time with Haddenham. I will miss Haddenham  and the YFC life immensely.

And with that…

A little trip to Ivybridge

Last Saturday, Marco Loxley, Anna, Nicole and myself went over 200 miles to visit Ivybride, a quaint town in the far South West of England. We were there to support Marco as he presents a seminar on Youth Cafe’s. I am sure Marco will cover that in more detail in the next newsletter.

It was a long trip, but well worth it. If nothing else just to hear the YFC National Director Gavin Calver speak to the Church. He is an excellent speaker and I felt totally inspired.

To support Marco we create 4 videos as part of his presentation (upload soon).

Naturally I took a few photos, and was even asked to perform some official photographic duties (no rest for the wicked).
